Commissioning Strategy for Substance Misuse Services (Conwy, Denbighshire & Flintshire)

Denbighshire Substance Misuse Action Team

The Substance Misuse Action Team (SMAT) was established to co-ordinate the activities of groups and agencies with regard to reducing drug and alcohol misuse in accordance with the requirements of the Welsh Strategy. The SMAT is a sub group of the Denbighshire Community Safety Partnership which was established as a requirement of the Crime and Disorder Act 1998. Its remit includes co-ordinating treatment services, enforcement activity to stifle the illegal supply of drugs and alcohol, and the provision of training and educational programmes. A major part of its work is supporting people through treatment and rehabilitation and providing support for families of such people. The SMAT is required to deliver the key performance indicators set by the National Assembly for Wales with regard to the various elements contained in the Welsh Strategy. The SMAT has four sub groups which monitor the following aspects of the strategy: Treatment, Availability, Supporting Communities and Training.

The SMAT is currently working to its 2005 – 2008 Substance Misuse Action Plan which commissions services such as The Dewi Sant Centre in Rhyl, The Motivational Enhancement Team delivered through CAIS, Primary Care Workers, The Choose Life Project and an Alcohol Misuse Project. A full copy of our action plan and expenditure plan is available on request.
